Denotation: A white phone, A gun
Connotation: When will runs home away from the monster he goes to his phone which is an old phone from the 1980s which instantly tells the viewer what time it is, when Will is realises that he can hear the monster through the phone and then sees the monster outside his door he runs to his shed in search of safety, whilst trembling Will tries to load the gun that is on the work bench, the fact that he is unable to load it quickly and he is shaking whilst loading the gun creates tension for the audience this make the audience more invested in the plot and wanting to find out what happens next
Lighting
Denotation: Dim lighting, Flickering lights in the lab, very bright light bulb in Wills shed
Connotation: The scientist who is running away from the monster is in a dimly lit lab with flickering lights which suggests that something terrifying is going to happen and sets an ominous mysterious tone for the rest of the scene, the scene then abruptly switched to a dark garden at night time. The fact that it is dark outside reflects the horrors that had taken place in the lab. This is then contrasted by the warm yellow lighting inside Mikes house which can connote safety, joy and happiness that is represented with the boys having fun whilst playing the game. When all the boys are leaving and Will is saying goodbye the lights above the garage flicker foreshadowing how the boys are not safe and how what happened in the lab is not a one time thing and is going to play a large part in the plot. Once again there is a quick lighting change from when the boys are inside to when will is riding home on his bike in the dark and alone representing evil or death, it is then where Will sees the monster and starts to run home. The fact that Wills house is dark and so is his shed represents how Will is not safe there. Finally where will is taken the light bulb begins to glow very bright which represents the monsters presence which is interesting because monsters and supernatural creatures are often represented by the darkness, once Will is taken the light bulb dims quickly showing that the monster has left.
Setting
Denotation: Dark, Gloomy sky throughout the scene. Isolated, colourless, maze-like lab, Bright room where the boys are playing. Dark, cluttered and messy house
Connotation: The maze like Lab the scientist is in builds tension as the audience does not know what is around the corner and it creates a never ending effect for the audience that makes the scene feel so long. The pitch black sky creates an eerie atmosphere for the rest of the scene in contrast to the bright room the boys are playing in, this can create a sense of safety but it can also show who will defeat the creature as it might be trying to show how the Characters are bright and joyous and the opposite to their dismal and depressing surroundings. When will seeks safety in his house from the monster you can see how his house is very different from Mikes house in the fact that there is nobody in the house compared the Mikes busy house, everything is cluttered and everything is much darker which can show the contrast between the two Characters or their families. The shed is also very messy which can represent Wills state of mind.
