1) Look at the Tatler Media Pack. Go to page 2: how does the editor introduce the magazine?

She says that the magazine is aimed to a wealthy and rich audience and she promises that the lifestyle presented in the magazine should be similar or relatable to the readers

2) Now go to page 4 of the Media Pack. Focus on the print magazine (NOT tatler.com - the website). List the key demographic details: age, gender %, ABC1 % (social class), HHI (Household Income), % of those living in London and the South East. What do these demographic details suggest about the average Tatler reader?

This suggests that the average tatler reader is someone who is very wealthy, middle aged and female

Tatler readers seem to spend money on the most recent and up to date fashion trends for the rich and are easily influenced by tatler which makes the impression that tatler is a respectable brand 

4) Go to page 10. What are the special editions of Tatler that run throughout the year? What does this suggest about the Tatler audience? What about the pyschographic audience group that best fits Tatler?

There is a spa edition, travel guide edition, school guide edition, beauty and cosmetic surgery edition, a wedding guide and a jewellery and watches editionwhich suggests that the audience is female because the covers of these editions are women and the things they talk about are stereotypically for women, it suggests that they are extremly wealthy to the point where the only things they worry about is how to relax by going to spas or holidays and shows they have enough money to do so. It also implies that they are well educated because of the school edition which could reflect how the upper class value education. The aspirer group best fits that audience as everything they do is material based which is why they want to spend money on jewellery and watches to show their wealth to others and impress them

Media language

1) What different examples of typography can you find on the cover of Tatler? What are the connotations of the serif and sans serif fonts?

Whilst the title is in serif to reflect how classy and traditional the magazine is, all the other text like the cover lines is in sans serif which reflects the modernity of the magazine and how it is up to date despite being traditional

2) How do the cover lines appeal to the Tatler target audience?

The brexit pun is something tatler readers would be interested in as many of them wanted to leave because it would benefit them and so instantly they know the magazine has the same viewpoint as them. The cover lines are typically things that the upper classes would do or care about for example when most people would be worried about covid, tatlers audience would have be more concerned about the cover lines like what they would wear 

3) What are the connotations of the Tatler colour scheme on this particular front cover?

The greens, whites and blacks create a modern and up to date look and the pinks on her dress could be associated with femininity which instantly creates the idea that the magazine is targeted towards a rich female audience

4) How is the central image designed to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. the model, the mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression etc.
)

The fact that the woman is black subverts the representations of race in Tatler but you could also argue that she is just there to show tatler readers that they are modern and not old fashioned and that she still has fairly light skin this could be to make the current tatler audience more accepting of her 
The woman is showing off her ring (prop) which attracts people who are either interested in jewellery or weddings 
The colours of her dress (costume) shows that the magazine is for women and the style of the dress looks like something a member of the royal family would wear which attract fans of the royal family 


Representations

1) What celebrities or famous people are mentioned on the cover? Why do you think Tatler put them on the cover?

Emma weymouth- since this was during the blm protests it could be to show their support 
Max- Boris Johnson's brother the fact that its only the first names makes the reader feel as though they are friends with them as its informal and boris is also in the conservative party which most tatler readers would support

2) What do the cover lines suggest about the lifestyle of rich people in the UK?

It suggests that they are political but not heavily and interested in fashion

3) Looking at the image and cover lines together, what different groups of people are represented on the cover and how are they represented? (E.g. men/women/rich people/race & ethnicity etc.) 

The woman wearing the revealing dress adds to the sexualisation of women in the media 

4) Are there any stereotypes being reinforced or subverted? How? Why?

Subverted
-the woman on the front cover shows that she is in a position of power
-the fact that she is black subverts the representations of race and ethnicity in tatler 
-women are interested in politics 
Reinforced 
-the revealing dress sexualises the woman 
-women like "feminine" colours like pink 
-women are interested in fashion and relationship gossip only

Social and cultural contexts

1) What types of people are NOT featured in Tatler? (Watch the clip above again if you need help with this - the clue is in the title 'Posh People')

People who are not extremely wealthy 

2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain? 

It assumes that life for everyone in Britain is lavish and luxurious  

3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler? 

people from lower classes 

4) Find three other front covers for Tatler from different months. What issues, subjects or people are regularly featured in Tatler?

As an extension, you may want to watch the documentary about Tatler linked above to find out more on the social and cultural contexts for the magazine. Then, think about or write answers to these questions:

1) What would be the preferred and oppositional readings to this cover of Tatler?

2) Are there any misrepresentations or under-representations of certain groups? What might this suggest about the target audience?

Whilst they try to appear inclusive by putting a black woman on the front cover the womans skin colour is still relatively light which could be because the audience that reads tatler are upper class, middle aged and British women who could have old fashioned views and might not agree with putting a person of colour on the front cover 

3) How does the front cover engage audiences with possible narratives? Look for stories, cliffhangers, dramatic cover lines etc.

4) Read this Guardian article on the BBC documentary about Tatler called Posh People. What does the article suggest about the people who produce and read Tatler?
